It's been a long time since I posted....moving to Alaska has really slowed my collecting activitiy. Still, I have managed to pick up a few items.
Here is my first SS helmet purchase since 1986. Back then $500 bought a very nice SD SS; now it buys what you see below. This helmet appears to be untouched and I think there's enough of the decal left to prove it's SS. I can see a portion of the 'zig-zag' area of the right hand rune. I also see most of the border, some of the silver, and a lot of black on the left side where the silver was scraped off (I assume this was scraped during the war). Was black the base of these decals with silver applied on top?
Also of interest is the owner's name, which is penned on to the leather. I believe it also shows his rank, which I take to be either Gruppen Fuhrer or OberGruppen Fuhrer. The best I can make of the name is as follows:
(O) G.-Fur Rodnelt
It might just as easily be G. Fur Radnelt or Ratneld or Rodnelz or Radnelz or something similar. ....hard to tell. I'm really hoping that someone on the Forum with familiarity with german names and lettering can help out. I think it would be wonderful to discover for sure who this guy was, as I believe it would really help to pin the helmet down as an SS.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Harvey
